NYmex To Trade Carbon Offsets
The New York Mercantile Exchange is planning to offer contracts for trading carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The Chicago Climate Exchange (see link above) was the first in the U.S. to create an exchange for trading carbon credits. The U.S. does ot have a cap on greenhouse gases or carbon dioxide but it is expected that Congress will approve some sort of mandatory cap soon. Normally, a cap is needed to stimulate a trading market. Voluntary trading of allowances is currently being conducted without a mandatory. The Center is developing its Carbon Mercantile Exchange in this voluntary atmosphere. (Wall Street Journal, 6-10-07)
